Up in arms: Police officials trying to restore order during an agitation against the Chamalapura thermal power plant in Mysore on Thursday.
MYSORE: Opposition to the controversial coal-based Chamalapura thermal plant is gaining momentum in Mysore. On Thursday, 200 people, including women from Chamalapura, tried to barge into the venue of the valedictory function of the centenary celebrations of the cooperative movement at the Dasara Exhibition Grounds here demanding that the project be withdrawn. Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar participated in the valedictory function. However, the police arrested them on Nanjangud Road. They were released later. Convener of ACICM M. Lakshmana and other members were also arrested along with them. Before proceeding to Nanjangud Road, they tried to enter the venue from two other entry points, but they could not do so because of tight security. When they were trying to enter the Dasara Exhibition Grounds through the M.G. Vegetable Market area, the police rushed to the spot and asked them to meet Mr. Pawar at the helipad in a three-member group. But when they insisted that all of them should be allowed to meet the Minister, they were arrested. Traffic was disrupted for some time when some protestors showed resistance to get inside the police vans.
