Three killed, houses damaged by landslips

Dehra Dun: Three girls were killed and several houses damaged due to landslides caused by heavy rains at several places in the hill State of Uttarakhand.

Landslides struck in the remote Kirai village of Bageshwar district on Wednesday, flattening a house in which two girls died and their father injured.

A young girl was washed away in flash floods in Kashipur area of Udhamsingh Nagar district on Wednesday.

Ratigad area of Pithoragarh district was also severely hit by landslides which damaged several houses.

However, no loss of life was reported.

Wall of a house collapsed due to incessant rains at Rajpur road area in Dehradun in the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday. However, no casualty was reported. The inclement weather has adversely affected the Chardham Yatra at various places. The highway leading to Badrinath Shrine was blocked at Lambagad and Makhari in Chamoli district, disrupting traffic.

Uttarkashi-Tehri road was also blocked by landslides at Dhaulapani area causing traffic jams. ITBP personnel were trying to clear the roads.

Meteorological director Anand sharma said several areas in Uttarakhand recorded moderate rains with isolated heavy downpour during the past three days.

The State has so far received 457 ml of rains since June 1 which was 14 per cent above normal, Mr. Sharma said. Dehra Dun alone recorded 715 ml of rain in the past one month, he said. -- PTI
