Tuticorin: The 12-day annual festival of the historic Our Lady of the Snows Church commenced here on Thursday.
The Bishop of Tuticorin, Yvon Ambroise, hoisted a flag to mark the beginning of the celebrations, amidst chanting of prayers from 50,000 odd devotees. Pigeons and balloons were released during the inaugural function.
The Minister for Animal Husbandry, P Geetha Jeevan, the Collector, R Palaniyandi, and the Superintendent of Police, John Nicholson, attended the inaugural.
Adding colour to this year’s carnival, the church was also observing its 425th anniversary, silver jubilee year of becoming a Basilica, and 200th anniversary of the Golden Car, all simultaneously.
Established in 1582, the shrine was raised to the status of Basilica by Pope John Paul II through his apostolic letter dated July 30, 1982.
Mass in Tamil, Malayalam
The church sources said that this year’s celebrations would be marked by special mass in Tamil and Malayalam, rosary, sermon, Corpus Christi procession, solemn vespers and benediction by Tamil Nadu Bishops, and Golden Car feast day.
