Journey for a cause: R. Pannerselvam during his campaign at Krishnagiri on Friday. —

Krishnagiri: A young man who lost his precious childhood and opportunities to gain formal education, is on a State-wide campaign to ensue that every child enjoys its childhood, besides not missing out on educational opportunities. Though his decision is born out of regret, his motive is that no other child should meet the same fate.

On the other hand, he wants all children to go to school and stay away from work until they were the right age for employment.

Education

He seeks to convey to young people that childhood once lost did not return and it for them to make use of their early years to get educated.

R. Paneerselvam (23) of Tiruthangal village in Virudhunagar district started his campaign on May 7 from Kanyakumari and had covered the Southern and Central districts of the State before reaching Krishnagiri on July 27.

While studying SSLC, Pannerselvam dropped out of school due to abject poverty, only to take up a job in a printing press.

Printing press

The hands that were meant to carry books toiled instead in the printing press.

“I worked in the printing press for hours together to earn a meagre salary of Rs.400 per month.

“Realizing my mistake, I have started on this campaign to create awareness among people and students on the negative effects of child labour and need for compulsory education,” he says.

He visits special schools run by the National Child Labour Prevention Programme (NCLP) and creates awareness among students on the importance of education and abolition of child labour, which affects children.

He also carries placards on his cycle with messages on compulsory education, in order to bring home the message of his rally.
