Correspondent

Seminar on ‘legal assistance for land’ conducted

Kakinada: Poor people will lose confidence on the judiciary if the land problems are not solved expeditiously, cautioned M. Sunil Kumar Reddy, State legal coordinator of Society for the Elimination of Rural Poverty (SERP).

Participating as the chief guest in the seminar on ‘legal assistance for land’ organised by the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Law here, he said, land problems were on an increase and the lands belonging to poor and small farmers continue to be in the hands of land grabbers leading to frustration and unrest among the poor.

Financial assistance

In certain cases, he said, the lands distributed by the government were going out of the hands of the beneficiaries owing to their poverty.

He opined that in addition to distribution of lands to the poor, the government should provide them the financial assistance for cultivating the same.

Sunil Kumar Reddy has warned that a new corporate landlords set up was coming in to force leading to the danger of most of the lands going into those corporate bodies control.

He advised the law students to work as para legals and strive for solving the land problems cooperating with the lawyers, courts and government officials.

P.V. Trinath principal of Rajiv Gandhi Institute of law said that their students would adopt some villages every year and strive for settling the land problems.

District legal coordinator P. Vijaya, SERP district project manager Subbaraju, lecturers B. Srinivasarao, S. Bhushan Patnaiak attended the seminar.
