Remove weeds from all water bodies, say farmers

Special Correspondent

NAGAPATTINAM: Farmers in the Cauvery delta region of the district on Friday urged the Collector to take immediate steps for removing the weeds such as ‘Neyveli Kattamani’ from major irrigation channels and ensure free flow of water to other branch channels to reach the fields.

Participating in the farmers’ grievance day meeting chaired by Collector Tenkasi S. Jawahar, they said that the weeds could easily be removed under the present wet conditions.

Arupathi Kalyanam, general secretary of Federation of Farmers’ Associations in Thanajvur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts, suggested engaging people of the respective villages under the Tamil Nadu Employment Guarantee scheme for removing the weeds quickly by stopping the flow of water in the channels during turn system. Nearly 50 per cent of the 1,505 ‘A’ class irrigation channels were completely ruined by the weeds.

Mr. Kalyanam said that allocation of Rs.40 crore for providing crop loan to farmers through primary agricultural cooperative banks (PACBs) was inadequate and pointed out that the three delta districts of Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam required a total loan amount of Rs. 840 crore of which Nagapattinam district needed Rs.216 crore. Commercial banks were giving priority only for jewel loan for farmers than crop loan.

He suggested convening a meeting of top officials of Agriculture, Public Works and Cooperation departments and banks immediately to solve the problems of farmers with regard to issue of crop loan, fertilizer and seed supply and for easy flow of water.

The Collector said that the Agriculture Department was keeping adequate stock of certified paddy seeds of medium and long duration varieties and fertilizers like urea, potash, DAP. The Collector said that the commercial banks had so far disbursed nearly Rs.80 crore of jewel loan to 27,500 farmers and Rs.7.50 crore crop loan to 3,500 farmers. The PACBs have disbursed Rs.3.75 crore as crop loan to 2,130 farmers so far in the district, he said.
