dated July 28, 1957: Karan Singh’s appeal

The Sadar-I-Riyasat of Kashmir, Yuvraj Karan Singh, on July 27 pleaded for enlightened public opinion in the world “to compel the aggressor to admit his war guilt in Kashmir” and force him to withdraw from those areas of the State which were still under the unlawful occupation of Pakistan. He added, “Conflict and bitterness among neighbours and nations can be eliminated only if the methods of war and violence are abandoned.” The Sadar-I-Riyasat was addressing a joint session of the two Houses of the newly-elected Kashmir Legislature. Earlier, he administered the oaths of office and secrecy to the Ministers of the new Kashmir Government, headed by Bakshi Ghulam Mohammed. Bakshi Ghulam was sworn in as Premier on July 26.
