Consumer electronics body plea to State Government
|
CHENNAI: Consumer Electronics and Appliance Manufacturers Association (CEAMA) has urged the State Government to treat IT and Consumer electronics on a par by pegging State VAT and Excise Duty at the same level and allot land at subsidised rate.
Talking to newsmen here on Friday, CEAMA president Anoop Kumar said “with the advent of digitisation there is a clear convergence of application and technologies. The difference between IT and non-IT products is getting blurred. One can view the TV programmes on personal computers and on mobile phones and TV can be used to access Internet. Therefore, State VAT on IT and Consumer Electronics products should be at 4 per cent.”
To curb the grey market, he suggested that excise duty on consumer products including components and other inputs should be rationalised at 8 per cent and said that share of grey market for VCD, DVD players, TV sets, car stereos, radio was between 50 to 80 per cent leading to loss of revenue to the government.
Southern States had been posting enormous growth in consumer electronics segment, with Tamil Nadu accounting for 11 to 12 lakh CTVs annually.
The placement order for 25 lakh CTVs by the State Government has proved to be a shot in the arm for CTV manufacturers. Seven to eight key players had expressed their desire to set up units in the State to supply the products on time.
Land at subsidised rate
Delivering his keynote address at a seminar on “Growth of Electronic Hardware & Appliance Industry,” CEAMA past president and Mirc Electronics chairman Gulu Mirchandani said they were ready to invest in Tamil Nadu, if they were granted land at subsidised rate. “There is no point in procuring land at the market rate of Rs 1 crore per acre as our margins are below 3 per cent.”
CTV tendering process
State IT Secretary and Elcot chairman C. Chandramouli said management school students should take a leaf out of the tendering process followed by the State in procuring 25 lakh CTVs for free distribution to the poor. “It was done in such open and transparent manner. We kept up our promise so did the industry representatives with regard to supply, and quality. CTVs performed well despite fluctuations in power supply in the rural areas.”
