CBI probe may be sought into JEE racket
Special Correspondent
KOLKATA: The West Bengal Government might seek an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation into a racket that engaged impersonators to appear for the State’s Joint Entrance Examinations.
“The CBI might be asked to investigate if the racket is found to extend to various other States. It is not possible for our police to investigate in every other State,” Home Secretary Prasad Ranjan Ray said here on Friday.
Persons suspected to be connected with the racketeers — who collect exorbitant sums from JEE candidates and later pay a fee to an academically qualified person to appear in the examinations on behalf of the examinee —have been arrested from Bangalore and Benares.
The number of those arrested in connection with the racket so far has risen to eleven.
The racketeers are reported to have links in Allahabad also, a police official said.
