KATHMANDU: The latest spate of monsoon rains has wreaked havoc in the southern plains of Nepal, killing at least 11 persons in the last two days and rendering thousands homeless. Incessant rain during the past three days has triggered massive floods and landslips, killing five members of a family in Salyan district. Two persons died in Dang and one each in Saptari, Bake, Udayapur and Bajang districts. Over 1,000 houses were submerged in 19 villages of Bake district after the Rapti river overflowed. Another 1,000 persons were affected by the flooding of the Babai river in the adjoining Baridya district. In eastern Nepal, Sunsari, Saptari, Siraha and Dhanusha districts were seriously affected by the torrential rain and unprecedented floods. The heavy rain in most of the southern plains is hampering rescue efforts and the exact number of deaths and the scale of damage is still unknown. The Department of Meteorology has predicted that the downpour will continue. Addressing the interim Parliament on Friday, Home Minister Krishna Prasad Sitaula announced a relief package of Rs 15,000 for each of the families of those killed.
