Gorbachev blasts U.S.

Vladimir Radyuhin

MOSCOW: The former Soviet Union leader, Mikhail Gorbachev, has blamed the United States for the current global disarray, saying Washington is suffering from a “victor’s complex.” “The Americans are craving to be the winners. They suffer from a victor’s complex and this is the main reason why the world is in disarray,” Mr. Gorbachev told a rare press conference in Moscow on Friday. “After the break-up of the Soviet Union, the U.S. decided they had their hands free,” he said. “They pushed Europe into a war. They thought they finally had their chance to build an empire. They threw all intellectual and political forces into this job. It was an exercise in wishful thinking and it has come to nothing.” The former Soviet leader feels that turmoil is growing in the world, but the current U.S. administration is unable to understand that it cannot boss around the world. “It is impossible to command the world from one centre — be it the U.S. or the Group of Eight. The U.S. has made mistakes in aspiring for a unipolar world, ignoring the U.N. and international law.”
