Tirunelveli scientist gets award

Staff Reporter

TIRUNELVELI: The Jawaharlal Nehru Award for postgraduate agricultural research 2006 has been awarded to T. Sherene Jenita Rajammal of Tirunelveli in natural resource management.

She received the award, carrying Rs.20,000 in cash, a citation and a gold medal from Union Minister for Agriculture, Sharad Pawar.

Dr. Sherene studied the extent of heavy metal pollution in Coimbatore district.

She conducted detailed studies on lead and nickel pollution by electroplating and sewage water.

Electroplating industries that release effluents containing ‘mobile metals’ like Nickel, Cadmium, Chromium and Copper should be established in heavy textured soil.

She reported groundwater contamination with lead and nickel in five study areas of Coimbatore district.
