Tuticorin: The ‘botanical insecticide’ recently developed by the Agricultural College and Research Institute, Killikulam near here, a constituent of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, to repel the rice ear head bug from the paddy crop, is all set to be commercialised.
The TNAU signed a memorandum of understanding with Bhuvicare Private Limited, Tirunelveli, allowing the company to manufacture the product on a commercial basis and sell it within the State for one year. The insecticide will be sold under the brand name of "‘V’ Kriyaa".
P. Vivekanandan, Dean, ACRI, said the ‘botanical insecticide’ was developed by an institute team headed by S. Jeyarajan Nelson, Professor of Entomology, after a decade-long research.
The insecticide was produced by mixing 10 per cent of Acorus calamus (vasambu) rhizome powder with 90 per cent of fly ash, which is generated as waste from the Tuticorin Thermal Power Station.
According to the Dean, the product was launched on a commercial basis after its efficacy was successfully tested at paddy fields situated on the ACRI premises of Paddy Breeding Station in Coimbatore and the Rice Research Station in Tirur.
“The dust formulation (insecticide) was found to be eco-friendly, easy to formulate and no problems of residue in the crop,” he said.
The recommended dosage of the product was computed at 25 kilogram for a hectare.
