VIJAYAWADA: Officials of the Labour Department and the National Child Labour Project (NCLP), in association with representatives of non-government organisations working in the field of child labour eradication, on Friday rescued 20 children of below 14 years of age from two different workplaces in the city. NCLP District Coordinator K. Sivasankar Rao said 12 children hailing from Srikakulam district and working in a mattress-making unit near Kendriya Vidyalaya, Madhura Nagar, were rescued early in the day, while another 8 children working in a printing press at Chuttugunta were rescued later. Cases were registered against the employers who engaged the children in work, and the rescued children were sent to Childline centre. According to Mr. Rao, information about the children engaged in the mattress-making units at Madhura Nagar came from Jesus Prayer Fellowship, a local NGO, and Navajeevan Bala Bhavan. The children were found working from makeshift sheds, which run along a drain abutting the road laid on the removed railway track. As the place would not catch the attention of anyone, they were being made to work in hazardous units. Assistant Commissioner of Labour Venkata Reddy cautioned the parents against sending their children to work. Mr. Rao said they were contemplating levying a fine of Rs.25,000 on each employer.
