Sheila Dikshit lays foundation stone for Jwala Heri-Bhera Enclave intersection underpass on Outer Ring Road

“Delhi will have more flyovers and underpasses than any other city except Tokyo”

NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Friday laid the foundation stone for the Jwala Heri-Bhera Enclave intersection underpass on Outer Ring Road that would be constructed by April 2009 at an estimated cost of Rs.55 crore. Ms. Dikshit announced that more such underpasses would come up on Ring Road and Outer Ring Road to facilitate smooth flow of traffic, minimise travel time, reduce fuel consumption and curb accidents.

The Chief Minister said her Government was giving final shape to development plans while taking into consideration the future needs of the city. With the vehicle population in Delhi touching 50 lakh, she said, the Government was also looking at alternatives to road transport.

“We are committed to providing monorail to ease congestion of traffic in Delhi apart from commissioning High Capacity Bus System routes,” she said.

The 450-metre-long underpass would provide uninterrupted straight-ahead vehicular movement along Outer Ring Road. The rotary intersection at ground level would ensure free movement of traffic from Jwala Heri to Bhera Enclave and right turning traffic from Outer Ring Road. The project would also have two foot over-bridges on both ends along Outer Ring Road and would cater to 10,500 passenger car units during peak hours.

Public Works Department Minister A. K. Walia said this was the 16th of the 27 projects that were planned to be commissioned before the Commonwealth Games in 2010. Following Tokyo, he said, Delhi would have the maximum number of flyovers and underpasses in the world. Moreover, 31 foot over-bridges with escalators would soon be commissioned, he said.
