HYDERABAD: Driving according to your whims and fancies can spell ‘trouble’ soon with the Transport Department getting ready to conduct the trail run of surveillance cameras installed at two busy junctions – Khairatabad and Ameerpet, from August first week.

Two high performance network cameras which can be rotated 360 degrees, zoomed and tilted would be set up at each junction to track erring motorists.

Cameras will be operated by police personnel at the control room to video graph a violator.

If a car driver is found not wearing seat-belt then the policemen can zoom from the control room to capture his images and the vehicle registration number.

The police will later take out print outs and send them to their residences of the violators for fines payment.

“Motorists earlier used to argue with the police for sending ‘challans’ to their houses and on a few occasions, they had even refused to pay the penalty but these tactics will not work as we have video evidence,” said officials.

Constant vigil

The police can also keep a constant vigil on strangers moving under suspicious circumstances and political activists taking out rallies.

“We will conduct a trail run for 30 days and later install cameras at nine other junctions,” Joint Transport Commissioner N. V. Subba Rao said.

Cost of cameras

Works pertaining to put up the cameras has already begun. The cost of 22 cameras to be put up at all the 11 junctions is Rs.48.5 lakh.

Hyderabad is the third city in the country to install these hi-tech cameras after Delhi and Chennai.

A dedicated lease line has been set up between the transport department and the traffic police for faster transmission of data to send challans within few hours.
