Meet to discuss issues haunting Karur ryots

Staff Reporter

KULITHALAI: A meeting of Revenue and Cooperative department officials and farmers would be convened soon to sort out outstanding issues pertaining to cooperative sector in the district, Collector T.N. Venkatesh assured farmers at the grievances day meeting here on Thursday.

When farmers complained that they were facing a host of problems and especially that they were peeved at the uncooperative attitude of some local staff, the Collector and senior department officials promised them that the situation would be addressed by convening a meeting of all stakeholders. Means would be found to resolve the issues, they added.

‘Jamabandhi’

When farmers sought quick action on petitions submitted during the recent ‘jamabandhi,’ Mr. Venkatesh said that around 57 per cent of the total petitions submitted during the jamabandhi in Kulithalai taluk had been disposed of. The status of the petitions was being monitored continuously, he said.

While pledging support to farmers, the Collector called upon them to remit land revenue in time to avoid penal interest.

If land revenue in places such as Esanatham could be collected in full, why there was not enough enthusiasm among farmers in lush areas such as Nangavaram to remit land revenue? he wondered.

Farmers also wanted more ‘lascars’ to be appointed to the Public Works Department, stating that it had been long since replacements were posted to vacant positions. They also wanted adequate linemen and other essential staff for the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board in Nangavaram area.

The Neithalaur South Farmers’ Discussion Group convener, B. Packiam, wanted the bridge across Kattalai High Level Channel at Nangavaram to be repaired and the Highways Department officials clarified that the parapet that was found damaged would soon be repaired.
