3 more remote parking bays coming up at airport

P. Oppili

CHENNAI: Three more remote parking bays are coming up at the Chennai airport.

They are being constructed near the secondary runway, according to Airports Authority of India (AAI) sources.

The construction began in May this year and is expected to be completed by December.

The bays are being constructed at a cost of Rs. 13 crore. With more airline operators preferring Chennai as an important destination, the AAI constructed four bays a couple of years ago.

This was followed by another 15 bays last year.

A senior AAI officer says with more and more new airlines starting operations both in passenger and cargo sectors, there is a need for more bays, which can be used for night parking too.

A couple of foreign airlines have also shown interest in operating budget services from Chennai.

The AAI sources say a separate terminal needs to be created for them as in Southeast Asian countries.
