Plan to counter opposition to rail division

Staff Reporter

Trains from Podanur junction to Jolarpet to be blocked on July 30

Coimbatore: The all-party meeting convened by the Salem Railway Division Protection Coordination Committee on Friday decided to block trains to and from Kerala.

The agitation was aimed at thwarting attempts made by certain sections of political and official forces in Kerala to prevent formation and inauguration of the Salem Railway division, bifurcating the jurisdiction of the Palakkad division, speakers said.

The decision gains significance in the wake of a writ petition filed before the Supreme Court challenging the formation of the division.

Its inauguration, originally slated for August 14, has been put off to September 14 in the wake of the writ petition, the speakers said.

The meeting was convened by general secretary of the Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam K. Ramakrishnan. It was attended by representatives of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Bharatiya Janata Party, Pattali Makkal Katchi and the Dalit Panthers of India.

The meeting was also attended by representatives from various outfits of communities, industrial associations and commercial bodies.

Appeal to passengers

It appealed to passengers to avoid journey by rail towards Kerala and from there to Tamil Nadu on July 30.

The rail roko would be organised from Podanur junction till Jolarpet, the proposed jurisdiction of the new division, from 6 am to 6 pm.
