NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party will organise its own programmes throughout the country to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the First War of Independence waged in 1857. From August 9 this year to May 10, 2008 the State units will take out morning processions, organise essay competitions and seminars, honour widows of freedom fighters and focus on patriotism, general secretary Ananth Kumar, convenor of the BJP’s commemoration committee said here on Friday. Mr. Kumar said the BJP was hoping the United Progressive Alliance would undertake a countrywide programme on the occasion. Across sub-continent
The party would like the anniversary to be remembered across the sub-continent, for the people of India at that time included the people of Pakistan and Bangladesh. Each region had its own heroes who had participated in the First War of Independence. He said this would not be a political programme. Respectful remembrance of our inspiring past, not politics, was the idea, he said.
