COOLING OFF: The Tour leader, Alberto Contador of Spain, refreshes himself during the 18th stage on Friday.

ANGOULEME: Sandy Casar of France won Friday’s 18th stage of the Tour de France and Alberto Contador retained the overall lead as the doping-marred race edged closer to the finish in Paris this weekend.

Casar collected his first Tour stage victory in a sprint among four cyclists who broke away from the main pack during the 211-kilometre ride from Cahors to Angouleme.

The 29-year-old French rider pumped his right fist in the air as he crossed the line in 5 hours, 13 minutes, 31 seconds, edging out Axel Merckx of Belgium in second and Laurent Lefevre in third.

“Finally! It’s been a while that I’ve been waiting for this,” said Casar, who crashed during the stage after hitting a spectator’s dog and scraped up his hip. “I almost dropped out after the fall — I didn’t see it coming.”

Boonen keeps green

Tom Boonen of Belgium cemented his hold on the green jersey given to the race’s best sprinter by leading the pack across the finish line, 8:34 after Casar. With the race heading into Saturday’s crucial stage — a 55.5-kilometre individual time trial from Cognac to Angouleme — Contador narrowly extended his lead over Cadel Evans by three seconds.

The second-placed Australian trails Contador by 1:50 with two stages left, while U.S. rider Levi Leipheimer is third, 2:49 back. — AP
