Coimbatore takes lead

CHENNAI: Coimbatore took a crucial first innings lead of 25 runs on the first day of the two-day quarterfinals in the TNCA inter-district under-15 cricket tournament at the Polytechnic ground here on Friday.

Replying to Coimbatore’s 162, Vellore was bundled out for 137, with right arm medium pace bowler Bharath Chezian picking up six wickets.

The scores (quarterfinals): Coimbatore 162 in 44 overs (Bheer Bhimani 45, Bharath Chezian 28 not out, S. Prabhu five for 43, K. Muralidharan three for 34) vs Vellore 137 in 46 overs (B. Gowtham 69, Bharath Chezian six for 33).

Shikkar, Sivanesan shine

Shikkar Hukku’s unbeaten 102 (13x4) and an able 97 not out (10x4) by P.T. Sivanesan helped St. John’s ES and Junior College, Besant Nagar, to beat Boaz Public School by 216 runs in the Dr. Rajkumar Memorial State-level inter-school U-14 cricket tournament here on Friday.

The scores: St John’s ES and JC 290 for two in 30 overs (S.R. Vibhu 48, Shikkar Hukku 102 not out, P.T. Sivanesan 97 not out) bt Boaz Public School 74 for eight in 30 overs (Imran 28, Geet Puri four for 16).

Vysya Vidyalaya SSS 121 in 20 overs (M. Chidambarakumar 30) bt Valliammal MHSS 66 in 15.3 overs (M. Chidambarakumar three for 15).

Sacred Heart MHSS 102 in 18.1 overs (Suresh Kumar three for 17) bt Bhakthavatchalam Vidyashram SSS 62 in 15.5 overs (A. Venkatesh three for 19).
Indian Bank triumphs

Sai Krishnan, Sathish Kumar and Muthuraj put up fine performances as Indian Bank prevailed over ICF 28-26, 25-11, 25-16 to lift the Hussain Aga Memorial trophy for volleyball at the AG’s Office Floodlit courts on Friday. SDAT beat IOB 25-17, 25-22 to clinch the third place.

St. Joseph’s College of Engineering defeated SDAT 25-21, 25-21 in the last league match of the women’s section to lift the Sukumar Memorial trophy. Armed Police was runners-up.

Bertram from Aug.16

The Bertram memorial tournaments, organised by Loyola College, will be held from August 16. It is open to all colleges and higher secondary schools (bonafide students).

Colleges have to follow the Inter-University Sports Board eligibility rules. The events to be held are ball badminton, tennis (singles and doubles), basketball, volleyball, table tennis (singles and doubles) and chess.

Strength Building championship

The Indian Strength Building Federation will be organising the senior open World championship for men and women, junior and sub-junior World championships on July 29 at the Kerala Samajam Auditorium, 903 Poonamallee High Road from 8 a.m. onwards.
Chess coaching

The Children’s Club, Mylapore, will conduct chess coaching course for 5 to 15-year-olds apart from beginners and middle level players from August 2 at the club premises. For details contact secretary (28474140).
