CHENNAI: Coimbatore took a crucial first innings lead of 25 runs on the first day of the two-day quarterfinals in the TNCA inter-district under-15 cricket tournament at the Polytechnic ground here on Friday. Replying to Coimbatore’s 162, Vellore was bundled out for 137, with right arm medium pace bowler Bharath Chezian picking up six wickets. The scores (quarterfinals): Coimbatore 162 in 44 overs (Bheer Bhimani 45, Bharath Chezian 28 not out, S. Prabhu five for 43, K. Muralidharan three for 34) vs Vellore 137 in 46 overs (B. Gowtham 69, Bharath Chezian six for 33). Shikkar, Sivanesan shine Shikkar Hukku’s unbeaten 102 (13x4) and an able 97 not out (10x4) by P.T. Sivanesan helped St. John’s ES and Junior College, Besant Nagar, to beat Boaz Public School by 216 runs in the Dr. Rajkumar Memorial State-level inter-school U-14 cricket tournament here on Friday. The scores: St John’s ES and JC 290 for two in 30 overs (S.R. Vibhu 48, Shikkar Hukku 102 not out, P.T. Sai Krishnan, Sathish Kumar and Muthuraj put up fine performances as Indian Bank prevailed over ICF 28-26, 25-11, 25-16 to lift the Hussain Aga Memorial trophy for volleyball at the AG’s Office Floodlit courts on Friday. SDAT beat IOB 25-17, 25-22 to clinch the third place. St. Joseph’s College of Engineering defeated SDAT 25-21, 25-21 in the last league match of the women’s section to lift the Sukumar Memorial trophy. Armed Police was runners-up. The Bertram memorial tournaments, organised by Loyola College, will be held from August 16. It is open to all colleges and higher secondary schools (bonafide students). Colleges have to follow the Inter-University Sports Board eligibility rules. The events to be held are ball badminton, tennis (singles and doubles), basketball, volleyball, table tennis (singles and doubles) and chess.
