OASIS OF CALM: Visitors at the Thiruvanmiyur beach.
Chennai: The Chennai Corporation has invited landscaping architects to come up with designs for beautification of the Thiruvanmiyur beach. A 2.5-km stretch from Ashtalakshmi temple up to city limits on New Beach Road extension is to be developed under the beach beautification project proposed by the State Government. The city’s beach beautification scheme, estimated to cost Rs. 25 crore, has been divided into four packages: the stretch from Rajaji Salai to Napier Bridge; Marina; Elliot’s Beach and Thiruvanmiyur. Designs for the first three packages are ready. Registered landscaping architects have been asked to submit designs with specific suggestions for Thiruvanmiyur beach infrastructure, according to a senior Corporation official. A team, comprising Corporation engineers, a PWD architect and an expert from the Department of Horticulture, will assess the designs. The architects will then be asked to submit drawings on a larger scale. The Thiruvanmiyur beach, located south of Elliot’s Beach, is frequented by visitors from Tiruvalluvar Nagar, Valmiki Nagar and Kottivakkam. Proper maintenance of the streetlights and control of stray dog population will make the beach safer, say regular walkers. “We don’t require any special facilities. We just want a clean beach and walkway,” says 73-year-old R. Srinivasan, a Kottivakkam resident and regular walker.
