Task force to tackle AIDS

Staff Reporter

GUNTUR: The fight against HIV/AIDS will become more effective if it involved religious leaders, Education, Ethics and Spirituality executive director Rabbi Joseph has said.

Religious leaders can play a major role in spreading awareness about HIV/AIDS and should be used as effective tools to spread the message, he said while addressing a seminar on HIV/AIDS organised by the Gospel Mission of India here on Saturday.

Mr. Joseph, who had played a vital role in the Clinton HIV/AIDS Foundation, said that he was looking forward to work with like-minded non-governmental organisations in fighting the scourge.

“Inculcate compassion and love for those unfortunate people, because they too are the creation of God,” he said.

Speaking at the seminar, Gospel Mission of India general secretary P.N.S. Chandra Bose said that a task force would be constituted to effectively tackle the menace. The task force would coordinate with various NGOs in the five districts of East and West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur and Prakasam. Acharya Nagarjuna University Vice-Chancellor V. Balmohandas would head the task force.

Mr. Bose also said that a home exclusively for children of HIV-afflicted persons would be built in Guntur soon. Another home was likely to be built at Rajahmundry, he said.
