Solving real world problems necessary Interact with resource persons, faculty told
Belgaum: The two-day workshop on ‘Mathematical modeling’ concluded with the speakers deliberating on issues concerning the orientation of mathematics teachers at the undergraduate level, including those offering courses in engineering technology, here on Friday. The workshop was the result of a collaborative effort by Kittur Rani Chennamma Postgraduate Centre of Karnatak University and S.K.E. Society’s G.S.S. College of Arts, Science and Commerce. Delivering the keynote address, N.M. Buzurke said that the fundamental knowledge of mathematics was the quintessential basis underlying any aspect of technological innovation. Core mathematics cut across all academic disciplines and could be used as an effective tool in creating numerical models, also called Math-modeling. He further emphasised that mastering conventional areas of mathematics such as Real and Complex Analysis, Linear Algebra and Differential Equations was the key to developing and linking mathematics to various disciplines. The use of mathematical modeling had been constructively augmented in areas such as weather forecasting, to help generate warning systems, in Defence production, and had given rise to super-special disciplines such as computational biology and medicine, cryptography, coding, and financial engineering, he added. V.A. Hiremath, Chairman, Department of Mathematics, Karnatak University, Dharwad, who presided over the inaugural function, urged the mathematical faculty to increasingly interact with resource persons and technology experts in the domain to understand and explore the causes of real world problems and guide undergraduates in live projects involving math-modeling. R.D. Shanbag, Chairman, SKE Society, pointed out several real-world problems where mathematical modeling could be applied. Principal Madhuri Shanbag spoke on the relevance of such workshops as a multidisciplinary activity. The inaugural function was followed by technical sessions with lectures by Professors N.M. Buzurke, Bhoosnurmath, C.S.Salimath and T.Venkatesh.
