Upkeep of Peruvannamozhi crocodile farm sought

Kozhikode: The Conservation of Nature Society (CNS) has requested the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) to take necessary steps in the wake of reports about the ‘dilapidated condition’ of the wire-mesh at the Peruvannamozhi crocodile farm.

According to the society, the farm was served closure notice by the CZA as per Section 38 (H) of The Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.

CZA is empowered to recognise or derecognise zoos. Society joint-secretary Vinod K. Damodar alleged that the Forest Department was now maintaining the crocodile farm as a rehabilitation centre to bypass the closure notice.

It was a day of horror for local people last week when the shutters of Banasura Sagar, Peruvannamozhi and Kakkayam dams were opened.

The gushing waters rose almost to the level of water in the crocodile farm. A further rise would have let the crocodiles move into the river.

The executive committee of the society which met here on July 27 also requested the Wildlife Trust of India, an NGO with expertise in crocodile rehabilitation, to provide necessary help, Mr. Damodar said in a release here.

The farm, situated in the Kuttiyadi Irrigation project area, now has five crocodiles — four adults and a baby. It was set up in 1977 and is now a major tourist attraction.
