‘Give one more chance for reoption’

Oommen Chandy says the higher education sector is in disarray

Suspects foul play in lapses in allotment list

‘Education lobby in other States has benefited’

Thiruvananthapuram: Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy on Saturday urged the State Government to cancel the allotment list for professional engineering colleges in view of the anomalies that had crept in and give one more chance to students to register for reoptions.

In a statement here, Mr. Chandy said reports about the lapses in the engineering allotment list had shocked students and their parents. The lapses, because of Government ineptitude, have further disrupted the higher education sector. He suspected foul play in the matter. It has become clear by now that students with higher ranking did not get allotment. He wanted the Government to inquire whether any attempt was made to accommodate ineligible students in the list.

The Government should have given an opportunity for re-option as soon as the High Court brought in amendments to the agreement between the Government and the managements of self-financing colleges on the fee structure, admission norms and reservation. Since the High Court had upheld the P.A. Mohammed committee’s fee structure, more students could now apply for admissions, he said.

Mr. Chandy said the higher education sector had been in a state of flux since the Left Democratic Front (LDF) came to power.

This has benefited the education lobby in neighbouring States. Thousands of students have been forced to seek admission in the neighbouring States this year also. Thousands are on tenterhooks, he said.

The Opposition leader said the LDF which had opposed the United Democratic Front Government’s 50:50 formula in admissions was now pleading with the self-financing colleges to accept it. He urged the Government to adopt a practical approach to the problems in the higher education sector.
