Sugar units told to clear dues

Belgaum: Deputy Commissioner in-charge Vijaykumar N. Torgal has directed the managements of sugar factories in the district to clear all dues for sugarcane procured from growers by August 31.

A decision to this effect was taken during a meeting held by the district administration with the managements of sugar factories here on Saturday.

The factories have so far paid farmers Rs. 400 for a tonne of sugarcane and are yet to pay the remainder. Growers and various farmers organisations have been demanding the Government intervene and pressure the managements to clear the dues. — Staff Correspondent
