NEW DELHI: A key witness in the Nitish Katara murder case, Ajay Katara, on Friday stood by his earlier statement that he had seen the victim in the company of prime accused Vikas Yadav, his cousin and co-accused Vishal Yadav, and the third accused Sukhdev Pehalwan before he went missing. Deposing before Additional Sessions Judge Ravinder Kaur in the trial for the third accused in the case, Sukhdev Pehalwan, Ajay told the court that on the night of February 16, 2002, he had seen the victim along with the three accused in a Tata Safari vehicle near Hapur check-post in Uttar Pradesh where his scooter had broken down. The vehicle had stopped behind his scooter and Vikas also abused him verbally, he told the court. Mental note
Ajay also told the court that he had made a mental note of the registration number of the vehicle as he wanted to lodge a complaint against Vikas. The witness also told the court that while Vikas, Vishal and Sukhdev were sitting on the rear seat of the vehicle, Nitish was in the front seat. Ajay told the court that he had gone to meet his friend, a constable in the Uttar Pradesh police, who lived in the Provincial Armed Constabulary compound in Ghaziabad, and was returning home along with a fellow villager when he saw the accused. Ajay had recently complained that the father of the prime accused and former Rajya Sabha member D. P. Yadav was trying to eliminate him. He was admitted to a Ghaziabad hospital after complaining of food poisoning. A case in this regard has been registered by the Ghaziabad police. In his earlier statement before the court also Ajay had claimed to have seen the accused with the victim in the vehicle on the night he went missing.
