NEW DELHI: Categorising scientific disposal and management of garbage as one of the most important components of her Government’s vision of making Delhi a world class city, Chief Minister Sheila Dikhsit on Saturday called upon the citizens to proactively participate in its “Clean City Campaign”. Speaking at an interactive session of the New Delhi Municipal Council on “Door-to-Door Garbage Collection” at the Jor Bagh Community Centre here, Ms. Dikshit said any progress in the field of successful garbage management and disposal would be possible only if proper segregation took place at the source where garbage was generated. The Chief Minister said involvement of people in solving issues like pollution caused by vehicular emission, plastic bags, effluent discharge in rivers and disposal of garbage generated from homes was essential. She also identified households, markets and industrial estates as primary sources where garbage was generated and appealed to the residents’ welfare associations, market trader associations and industrial associations to seriously start the process of separating bio-degradable and non-degradable waste before they were picked up by municipal agencies. Emphasising that creating a clean Delhi was imperative for making it a global city, Ms. Dikshit said efforts in the direction of civic infrastructure enhancement and sectors like power, water, health and education could all be overshadowed if the city was not clean.
