Coimbatore: A two-member team from Japan along with top officials of the State forest department visited the Tamil Nadu Afforestation Project (TAP) villages around Mettuppalayam and Karamadai recently.

The director of the Japan Bank for International Co-operation, Karasawa, and the Country Officer for India, Nakamura, accompanied by the Chief Conservator of Forests, S. Balaji, Conservator of Forests – Coimbatore, R. Kannan, District Forest Officer, I. Anwardeen, Regional Consultant Rajasekharan and others visited the villages.

The team visited Mothepalayam, Palapatti and Vedar Colony, phase I villages of the TAP, on Sunday. TAP was under implementation in Tamil Nadu in two phases from 1997-2002 and again from 2003 to 2012. The prime aim of the project was to ensure livelihood and better living standards for the tribal people to prevent them from plundering forest wealth and from falling into the hands of gangs plundering the forest wealth.

With the help of the funds from the Japan Bank, authorities extended revolving credit to the self-help groups and the Village Forest Committees for starting micro credit enterprises. Mr. Anwardeen said the success of a Rs 4.2 lakh revolving credit extended has yielded the desired results and through the entrepreneurial skills and participation of the tribals the same had grown into a Rs 9 lakh fund today. The tribals are engaged in pickle, incense stick making and a lot of other activities and these were appreciated by the visiting team. The team also visited the Mettuppalayam forest department timber depot, where saplings were being raised for the afforestation programme in the next phase.

The team assessed the preparedness of the machinery on carrying on the second phase and also took stock of the implementation of the first phase scheme and its success levels. The team also visited Bhagavathyammanpudur and Kandiyur where the Integrated Tribal Development Project was under implementation.
