JAIPUR: A live phone-in programme at “Aapno Radio” – an FM community radio station – will start at Banasthali Vidyapeeth, an all-women’s university, at Niwai in Tonk district of Rajasthan this coming Monday. The community radio has been functioning on the university campus since January 2005 under a pilot project in collaboration with UNICEF. The transmission, reaching nearly 50 villages in the radius of 15 km, focuses on education, health, environment, agriculture and rural and community development. UNICEF’s Country Representative in India Cecilio Adorna will inaugurate the live phone-in programme at Gyan Mandir Auditorium in Banasthali Vidyapeeth. UNICEF Project Officer Shikha Wadhwa said here on Saturday that the radio’s transmission time was being extended from three hours to six hours daily to cater to information needs of the rural communities. Ms. Wadhwa pointed out that Aapno Radio had been highlighting local issues and problems.
