A cop walks past a police vehicle set ablaze by a mob after a girl was killed in a road accident in Panchkula on Friday night.

PANCHKULA: An angry mob set on fire two Haryana Police Gypsies near Sector 12 here after an unidentified vehicle crushed a 15-year-old girl and hit at least two riders on a scooter and two strollers who were seriously injured late on Friday evening.

The police resorted to a cane charge to disperse the agitated crowd and there was tension in the area. Eyewitnesses said a black vehicle, believed to be a Scorpio being driven at high speed, hit the girl who died on the spot.

‘Police arrived late’

The driver, who was apparently inebriated, swerved to the other side of the road and hit a Kinetic Honda scooter whose riders were injured. The same vehicle also hit two persons believed to be residents of Sector 12 A.

The trouble arose as the police allegedly reached the spot quite late. Eyewitnesses said that the matter got aggravated as the people, mostly labourers, who had collected on the spot, alleged that the cops were “drunk” and “refused to take action”. This infuriated the mob and they set two police gypsies afire. Senior police officers rushed to the spot to diffuse the tension. A bystander said that another vehicle had hit the two strollers, believed to be residents of Sector 12-A, and the vehicle number was given to the cops. When this correspondent visited the spot, cops were having a tough time controlling the onlookers . The police later took into custody a few persons.
