COLOURFUL START: Minister for Social Welfare, Poongothai Aladi Aruna, lighting a lamp to mark the inauguration of ‘Saaral Tiruvizha’ at Courtallam on Saturday.
TIRUNELVELI: Amidst salubrious climate, the 9-day-long ‘Saaral Tiruvizha – 2007’ celebrations commenced at Courtallam on Saturday evening. In the inaugural function held at ‘Kalaivaanar Kalaiyarangam’ this evening, the Minister for Social Welfare, Poongothai Aladi Aruna, lighted the ‘kuththuvilakku’ to mark the commencement of the annual festival with the Speaker, R. Avudaiyappan, presiding over the function. Formally inaugurating it, the Minister for Tourism, N. Suresh Rajan, said the ‘Poor Man’s Ooty’, which had so far attracted over 25 lakh tourists this year, would get lighting facility in the Main Falls-Five Falls stretch within next 30 days. He also said that the Department of Tourism, which had a catering institute at Tuuvaakkudi, would soon start another institution in one of the southern districts. The Tenkasi MLA, V. Karuppasamy Pandian, said underground power cabling system should be introduced at Courtallam considering the strong winds sweeping the tourist spot throughout the year, owing to its proximity to the Western Ghats. Minister T.P.M. Maideen Khan, the Tenkasi MP, M. Appadurai, Radhapuram MLA, M. Appavu spoke. The Collector, G. Prakash, presided over the meeting and the District Revenue Officer, G. Srinivasan, proposed a vote of thanks. Various competitions for the tourists would be conducted as part of the celebrations. Swimming competitions in freestyle, backstroke and butterfly categories for men and women would be held at the swimming poll of Courtallam Town Panchayat opposite Viswanath Rao Park on July 29 at 3 p.m. Rangoli competitions would be held at ‘Kalaivaanar Kalaiyarangam’ on July 31 at 10.30 a.m. and ‘Mr. Courtallam 2007’ would be conducted at the same venue on the next day at 3 p.m. While ‘Fashion Show’ would be held at ‘Kalaivaanar Kalaiyarangam’ on August 2 at 10 a.m., long distance run would start at Old Courtallam on August 4 at 10 a.m. Boating competitions – both rowing and pedalling categories – would be conducted on August 5.
