22.76 million cubic metres dredged for Sethu project

Staff Reporter

TUTICORIN: A total of 22.76 million cubic metres has been dredged, as on July 25, in the Palk Bay, Palk Strait and Adam’s Bridge areas for the Sethusamudram project, N. K. Raghupathy, Chairman and Managing Director of the Sethusamudram Corporation, has said.

With the help of various agencies, the Corporation was monitoring the environmental impact from dredging and dumping sites as well as ‘shore points’ such as Dhanushkodi, Muthupettai, Sethubavachatram, Manamelkudi, Gopalapattanam, the Shingle Island, Devil’s Point and the Krusadai Island.

Data collected during the monitoring, done at an interval of four hours every day, was being reviewed periodically by the Environmental Monitoring Committee constituted by the Centre. The monitoring was meant to assess the quality of marine water, sediment and ambient air and noise level.

As part of the marine water quality assessment, Mr. Raghupathy said, pH value, salinity, turbidity and chemical properties were tested. The amount of suspended particulate matter, oxides of nitrogen, hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide was being analysed. Under the sediment quality testing, the presence of heavy metals, organic matter, nutrients and flora and fauna was assessed.

The preparation of a detailed project report for developing fishing harbours, under the Sethu project, at Muthupet in Tiruvarur district, Sethubavachatram in Tanjore district and Thondi and Mookaiyar in Ramanathapuram district was nearing completion.
