Rain cripples North Bihar

K. Balchand

PATNA: With the death toll rising and roads and rail communication nearly crippled in north Bihar, Governor R.S. Gavai pulled up the State government for failing to come to the rescue of the millions distressed by the current spate of floods.

Mr. Gavai summoned Deputy Chief Minister S.K. Modi and expressed concern at the deteriorating situation and directed the State government to come up with a relief and rescue programme.

Mr. Gavai sent for Mr. Modi in the absence of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar who is away in Mauritius.

Leader of Opposition Rabri Devi had protested against the Chief Minister’s programme in the wake of the floods and accused him of abandoning the affected people to their plight.

The Bhutahi Balan breached its embankment submerging parts of Madhubani city including some government offices. In Sitamarhi more than 40 villages were submerged and two persons were swept away. In East Champaran at least six people, including two girls, were reported dead in five separate incidents.
