Call for debate on civil code

Special Correspondent

Rajnath Singh

NEW DELHI: Some Muslim religious leaders are coming forward to support a uniform civil code for the country and this is welcome, Bharatiya Janata Party president Rajnath Singh has said.

Addressing a national executive committee meeting of the party’s Minorities’ Morcha, he said it was time for a national debate on the subject. He said the Congress was not a well-wisher of the minority community.

It ruled the country for nearly 55 of the 60 years since Independence but its policies left the Muslims behind.

The Congress’ minority politics was “narrow” and self-serving, he said.

Ayodhya issue

Besides calling for a national debate on a common civil code, Mr. Singh touched upon the other knotty issue – Ayodhya.

He said Muslim leaders should come forward to help resolve the issue and enable construction of a Ram temple at the disputed site.

He asked the party’s Morcha led by Shahnawaz Husain to urge its members to counter the propaganda by the “so-called secular parties” that the BJP was a communal party and against the minorities.
