Sundar made to work hard

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Top seed S. Sundar (AYTTA) was made to work hard for his title in the sub-junior section of the N. Krishnamoorthy Memorial all-Kerala Open prize money table tennis tournament at the YMCA hall here on Saturday.

Sundar’s team-mate Rahul Binu Mathew won the first set 11-8 after the first seed struggled to find his rhythm. But Rahul after losing a close second game 16-14 couldn’t match the better all-round game of his rival and lost the next two sets 6-11, 6-11.

Maria Rony of AYTTA completed a double winning the singles titles in sub-junior and cadet girls section. Maria overcame Anjaly S. Nair 9-11, 11-7, 11-6, 11-9 to win the sub-junior title while she beat Reshma Susan (RSC) 11-6, 5-11, 11-7, 11-8 to win the cadet title.

The results: Boys: Sub-juniors: final: S. Sundar (AYTTA) bt Rahul Binu Mathew (AYTTA) 8-11, 16-14, 11-6, 11-6. Semifinals: Sundar bt Dany B. Daniel (AYTTA) 11-4, 11-6, 5-11, 8-11, 11-8; Mathew bt Ranjith Benny (NKM) 12-10, 11-3, 11-8.

Cadet (semifinals): Rishwin Jackson (RSC) bt M. Unnikrishnan (NKM) 11-13, 11-6, 11-9, 5-11, 14-12; Ranjith Benny bt K. Kurian 11-6, 11-6, 12-10.

Girls: Sub-juniors: final: Maria Rony (AYTTA) bt Anjaly S. Nair (NKM) 9-1, 11-7, 11-5, 11-9. Semifinals: Maria bt Gayathri Girish (RSC) 11-6, 11-5, 11-3; Anjaly bt Seraha Jacob (AYTTA) 11-5, 11-6, 10-12, 9-11, 11-8.< /em>

Cadet: final: Maria bt Reshma Susan (RSC) 11-6, 5-11, 11-7, 11-8. Semifinals: Maria bt Seraha 6-11, 11-6, 11-4, 16-14; Reshma bt Gayathri 11-7, 11-9, 11-9.

Mini cadet: Final: Ria Sara Thomas (RSC) bt Aneesh Ganesh (Idk) 11-4, 11-4, 12-10. Semifinals: Ria bt Anna George (AYTTA) 11-4, 11-8, 11-5; Aneesh bt Anusree (NKM) 11-1, 11-1, 11-2.
