Chawla outsmarts Berry

Principal Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Kamal Chawla let his cue do the talking as he captured the highest break of nine canons in ousting Bhupender Berry 60-24 in the second round of the National one-cushion carombole championship at the Billiardco Hall here on Saturday.

Chawla, the India No. 8 snooker player, had an early break of eight canons before he unveiled a nine in his 37th visit before closing with a five to make it to the pre-quarterfinals. Chawla’s consistency with canons, despite having a first round bye, brought an excitement to the grim proceedings. He now takes on billiards exponent Dhruv Sitwala, who has just returned from the World Professional billiards championship in Leeds, England.

In the top half of the draw, Sumit Talwar defeated Thailand-based Bhupinder Singh 64-35 and set up an interesting pre-quarterfinal match with Devendra Joshi. In the same half, Kamal Deep Singh scored the highest points in 60 visits in beating Karan Manwani 72-39. He now takes on Anuj Uppal in the pre-quarterfinals.

Delhi’s Ami Lal enjoyed his luck to the fullest when Sandeep Singh messed up an easy setting in his 60th and final visit to the table. Sandeep was four points behind Lal when he made as many canons to tie the scores.

Sandeep had a easy setting to make yet another canon but his cue ball kissed the object ball instead of hitting the cushion first. Lal took his 60th visit and duly scored one canon to win 37-36. He now meets top-seeded Dhaminder Lilly.

The results: Second round: Ami Lal bt Sandeep Singh 37-36, Kamal Chawla bt Bhupender Berry 60-24, Kamal Deep Singh bt Karan Manwani 72-39, Sumit Talwar bt Bhupinder Singh 64-35, Ajay Rehani bt Rishit Jain 40-33.
