Journal retracts research study

COLUMBIA: The prestigious journal Science retracted a paper on Friday that included doctored photos from a former university researcher.

The journal retracted the paper a day after the University of Missouri-Columbia announced that it had completed an investigation that determined that post-doctoral researcher Kaushik Deb had altered pictures of mouse embryos. Complaints to Science and the university, after the publication of the photos in a February 2006 issue of the journal, had prompted the magazine to issue an “editorial expression of concern” in October, warning readers that the results of the earlier study might not be reliable.

The research indicated that cell division of a mouse embryo differentiated sooner than previously shown, with one cell eventually forming a placenta while the other, a foetus. The investigation cleared R. Michael Roberts and two others Mayandi Sivaguru and H.Y. Yong, of any wrongdoing. — AP
