Officials urged to prepare report for seeking aid

MP says he will try to get package for Chitradurga

Chitradurga: N. Y. Hanumantappa, MP has instructed officials in the Department of Agriculture to prepare a report assessing the crop loss in the district, in order to seek funds for relief work from the Union Government.

Speaking to the press here on Saturday, he said that owing to irregular rainfall and a drought-like situation, several farmers of the district were in severe distress.

Mr. Hanumantappa said that the Union Government had released Rs. 70 crore for farmers’ relief work in Tumkur district. “I will strive to ensure that a similar financial package be released for Chitradurga as well,” he said.

On the conditions faced by farmers cultivating pomegranate, who had suffered acute loss of crop, he said that the Centre had released Rs. 1 crore relief for them.

As per the scheme, Rs. 10,000 would be given for every two hectares of land used to cultivate the crop. Pomegranate cultivation had suffered damage on 6,000 acres of land this year, he added.

The Department of Horticulture has identified nearly 1,000 beneficiaries under the scheme who will be given cheques in a programme to be organised at Chalkere taluk on August 7.

The funds are not only meant for coverage of loss, but also to promote alternative farming practices such as the cultivation of oranges, he said.

Lack of facilities

He lashed out at the State Government for not making suitable arrangements for doctors in mobile dispensaries, a concept which was introduced approximately one year ago in the district with financial assistance from the MP’s Local Area Development scheme. The MP said that he had spent Rs. 11 lakh from the funds, in order to set up a technologically advanced mobile dispensary.
