Of a father-son relationship film review

Sooryan

The film, directed by V.M. Vinu, begins on a promising note. However, the second half filled with stereotyped action is a bit dragging. Scripted by the newcomers Satish K. Sivan and Suresh Menon, the film tells the story of a father-son relationship.

Harinarayanan (Sai Kumar) is a renowned Carnatic musician whose life is dedicated to preserving the purity of classical music. It is his desire that his son Sooryanarayanan (Jayaram) follows in his footsteps. But Sooryan, as he is called, is concerned about his future. He has to look after his brother’s wife and children. His brother gets killed in a quarrel with some moneylenders. Broken-hearted, Harinarayanan falls ill. It is only then that Sooryan learns that his father is neck-deep in debt. Sooryan decides to repay all the debts, but he has to pay a price for it.

A merit of the film is the music by the music maestro Ilayaraja. While the foot-tapping Paattellam paattano crooned by Vijay Yesudas is lively, Manase novathe is soothing in the voice of K.J. Yesudas.

The classical numbers Sabdamayi sabdabrahmamayi by Kavalam Srikumar and Krishnan Nambudiri and Anbe vaani again by Yesudas and Vijay stand out for their classical quality. The lyricist is Girish Puthencherry.

Sai Kumar has given a commendable performance as a musician and loving father.

Jayaram is his usual self, combining humour and seriousness.Harisree Asokan, as the effeminate dancer Nandakumar, evokes laughter throughout.

The cast includes Vimala Raman, Nandini, Vijayaraghavan, Vijayakumar, and Kottayam Nazir. Utpal V. Nayanar handles the camera.
