Watery grave for woman, daughter

Staff Reporter

VIJAYAWADA: A 20-year-old woman and her seven-year-old daughter were drowned in Ryves canal on Saturday. The Governorpet police said that Kanakadurga, a daily labourer from Guntur, came to the city a week ago along with her mother Pichamma, daughter Mariya Mamatha and four-year-old son Suresh. Pichamma and Kanakadurga were in search of work and they were taking shelter at Pandit Nehru Bus Station during night.

On Saturday afternoon, they bought food packets from an eatery near Alankar theatre and fed the children first. When Pichamma went to fetch drinking water, Kanakadurga took her children to the adjacent canal to wash their hands.

Suddenly, all the three fell down in the canal. The local rescued Suresh, but Kanakadurga and Mariya Mamatha were washed away in the canal.
