CHENNAI: Students denied educational loans can now write to Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram. “Just write your name, address, the institution you have been admitted to, the course you have opted for and details of the bank and the branch on a post card and send it to me,” Mr. Chidambaram told students at the ‘Raj Mudhalvan Awards 2007’ distribution function here on Saturday. He promised that action would be taken immediately. “If a student is pursuing a good course in a good institution, banks should not refuse up to a sum of Rs. 4 lakh,” he said. The UPA Government had so far facilitated grant of loans to the tune of about Rs.14,200 crore to nearly 9.37 lakh students. In five years, the Government would try to increase the percentage of students pursuing higher education to 15 per cent. It is about eight per cent now. “Our human resources are enriching other countries. Our expertise should benefit our country more,” Mr. Chidambaram said. State Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudy urged students to go beyond the textbooks and apply those concepts in real life situations. “Your education should benefit society,” he said and lauded the parents for supporting their children secure top scores. Corporation Mayor M. Subramanian said scholarships would soon be distributed to toppers from Corporation schools to help them pursue higher education. Eight edition
