Sanitation drive to be taken up in Peroorkada ward

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Peroorkada Government Hospital here is set to receive a facelift under a programme sponsored by the Union Government.

The project will be taken up by the City Corporation in collaboration with the State Government, the public sector Hindustan Latex Ltd. and non-Governmental organisations. The proposal also involves a sanitation drive in the Peroorkada ward. This was decided at a meeting convened here on Saturday by T.K.A. Nair, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister.

The action plan titled ‘Prevention of diseases through elimination of garbage’ will strive to make the Peroorkada ward a model one in terms of cleanliness and solid waste management. A separate project will be taken up for the hospital alone. The city-based architectural design and construction firm Habitat Technologies will prepare a master plan for the project.

Addressing the meeting, Mr. Nair said the project would get assistance from the National Rural Health Mission. The hospital would be equipped with modern facilities and equipment and the premises would be cleaned up. Mr. Nair said the Union Government would provide all possible help for the project.

Mayor C. Jayan Babu, Deputy Mayor V. Jayaprakash, chairman of the Corporation’s Health standing committee G.R. Anil, Health Secretary Viswas Mehta, DMO Kumari G. Prema, doctors from the Peroorkada hospital and representatives of residents’ associations in the Peroorkada ward were present at the meeting.

An implementation and monitoring committee for the project would be constituted next week.
