We are happy: Haneef’s kin
P. S. Suryanarayana
SINGAPORE: “We are happy to get back home.” This is how Imran Siddiqui, relative of freed Indian doctor Mohammed Haneef, described their unique emotional state shortly before their departure for India from Brisbane airport.
Australian authorities, who allowed Dr. Haneef to leave their country without restoring his revoked work visa, wanted him to keep a low profile while still on their soil.
Mr. Siddiqui spoke for Dr. Haneef as well, when contacted over telephone after they reached the Brisbane International airport.
Highly placed sources told The Hindu that Dr. Haneef was not given “a temporary bridging visa,” regarded as a legal prelude to the full restoration of his original work visa.
