NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday informed the Congress Working Committee (CWC) that all assurances given by the Government in Parliament regarding the Indo-U.S. civilian nuclear deal had been taken care of in the recently finalised agreement with the United States. He assured the CWC members that all strategic programmes of the country would remain intact. Briefing the CWC meeting which was presided over by the Congress president Sonia Gandhi, the Prime Minister said the country had suffered for the past three decades because of a restrictive regime and India paid heavily. The agreement with the U.S. for civil nuclear cooperation has opened new vistas for the country. Dr. Singh told the members of the party’s supreme policy making body that India had been recognised as a responsible nuclear power and the Government expected full cooperation from the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) for supporting the “nuclear trade” and while negotiating a safeguards agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency . The discussion on the Indo-U.S. civilian cooperation was opened by the senior Congress leader N.D.Tiwari, who is a special invitee to the CWC, and among those who participated in it included Union Water Resources Minister Prof. Saifuddin Soz and senior party leaders Margaret Alva and Devendra Dwivedi, party sources said here. The CWC complimented Ms. Gandhi for the successful completion of the Presidential election in which the UPA-Left nominee Pratibha Patil won by a huge margin.
