FRCP, another feather in Chennai doctor’s cap

CHENNAI: The recent conferment of Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, Glasgow, marks another career highlight for T.V. Devarajan, Internal Medicine specialist in Chennai.

The FRCP was awarded to Dr. Devarajan on July 18 in Glasgow.

Over a career that has combined academic excellence with social commitment, Dr. Devarajan, has taught at the Madras Medical College for the last 28 years foregoing salary, stipend or any other perk, worked in charitable dispensaries, served flood victims and held free medical camps.

The 2003 Dr. B.C. Roy National Award winner (‘Eminent Medical Teacher’) has also authored the books, ‘Aids to Clinical Medicine’ and ‘Medicine in a Nutshell’ for final year students. The books are due to come out next month. Dr. Devarajan, a consultant at Apollo Hospitals and medicine professor at AVMC Medical College, Puducherry, is now working on a ‘Textbook of Medicine.’

The publication, he says, will address the need for a textbook that explains diseases such as chikungunya that are common in India, discusses alternative systems like yoga and devotes a chapter to medical ethics.

A 15-member editorial panel of experts is assisting the project. The book, useful for third year to final year students, is expected to be launched in six months, he said. His daughter, Sangeetha Ramesh, working in a U.K. hospital, was awarded the Member of the Royal College of Gynaecologists degree this year. She was given the degree on May 27 in London.
