Kapur sizzles in bogey-free round

Hamburg: Shiv Kapur defied elements to shoot a brilliant second round 67 and zoom into contention at the midway stage of the Deutsche Bank Tournament Players’ Championship of Europe.

On a day hit by blustery winds and occasional rain, Kapur played one of his best rounds this season and shot five-under 67 to move to sixth place from overnight 61st.

Meanwhile, India’s other three stars Jyoti Randhawa (73), Gaurav Ghei (74) and Jeev Milkha Singh (79) missed the cut.

The lead is shared by England’s Zane Scotland (68) and Lee Slattery (69) at nine-under 135 for two rounds.

Great form

Kapur has been in great form this week and has not dropped a single bogey in his two rounds. He had just one birdie on the first day, but on the second, he flew on the wings of an eagle on the par-five third hole and then holed birdie putts on the sixth, 14th and 15th.

Disaster for Ghei

Ghei seemed to be staying on for the weekend till he hit disaster with three holes to go. Having started on the 10th, he was two-under when he came to the seventh. He shot himself out of the tournament with a triple bogey and not even a birdie on the closing hole, the ninth, could save him as he missed the cut by one.

Randhawa had three birdies and four bogeys in his 73 and missed by one shot.

Jeev was clearly in trouble and pain and look tired as he started with two bogeys and then found a birdie. But he bogeyed six in a row from fourth to ninth, his last six holes for a seven-over 79 and a total of five-over 149.

South African Anton Haig, second on the Asian Tour’s UBS Order of Merit, fired a second straight 69 to also share sixth place with Kapur.

Atwal misses the cut

Arjun Atwal finished with a round of three-under 69 and missed the cut by a long margin at the midway stage of the Cox Classic at Omaha (U.S.). Atwal had four birdies on the front nine and one more on the back, but with three bogeys he was way off the cut which came at five-under. Atwal was two-over 144 for two days.

Costly bogeys

A double bogey on the front nine proved costly as Daniel Chopra missed the halfway cut by one at the Canadian Open at Onatrio (Canada) on the US PGA Tour. Chopra shot a second round card of three-over 74, despite a closing hole birdie, and ended with one-over 143.

Korea’s Charlie Wi, second overnight, slipped to tied 20th after a second round 71 for a total of 137. He is five shots behind leaders Steve Allan and John Mallinger. — Agencies
