Facility to help the public deal with cyber crimes Any victim can report it through this portal
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Government is launching a web portal and a call centre to prevent cyber crimes. The portal- www.cyberkeralam.in - and the call centre –Phone number: (0471) 2727004 - are being launched by the Kerala IT Mission in association with the High Tech Crime Enquiry Cell (HTCEC) of the State police and the Resource Centre for Cyber Forensics, CDAC, here. K. Anvar Sadath of the IT Mission told The Hindu here that the portal would function as an interface to help the public deal with cyber crimes. Pointing out that cyber crimes are becoming a nuisance in the society Mr. Sadath said cy ber stalking and cell phone stalking are becoming widespread in the State. These two new facilities are also aimed at creating awareness among people about various types of cyber crimes, their impact on the society, and methods for their prevention. It also envisages providing information regarding cyber security and cyber forensics to people, he said. Any victim of cyber crime can report it through this portal. The complaint will be handled by HTCEC with the help of CDAC centre. The Cyber Crime Reporting Centre to be set up with these new facilities will provide an analysis of ‘white collar crime cases’ by processing data collected from this website. It will conduct preliminary enquiries by eliciting information from the complainant. Complaints filed through this website are processed and are referred to state, local, or international law enforcement agencies for possible action. However, the users have to register first to report the crime. But the registration is free of charge. The portal also displays a list of frequently asked questions related to cyber forensics, cyber crime, cyber security, and their corresponding answers. Cyber crime victims can also ring up the call centre to find out procedures to be followed for filing complaints against those individual or business groups who had tried to victimise them. Mr. Sadath, who is also director of the Akshaya project of the IT Mission, said there was a proposal to make Akshaya centres the hub for reporting and handling cyber crimes Currently available software tools can be distributed to these centres for helping the public. Similarly, all district headquarters of the police can be equipped with cyber crime analysis software to help them investigate such crimes. Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan will formally inaugurate these new facilities here on Monday.
